- What kinds of data will you collect (e.g. documents, newspaper articles, photos/videos/visual data, direct observation)? How will you collect your data (e.g. library research, archival research, survey, field research)? How will your data answer your project’s questions?

I am still in the process of looking for data but so far I have found a few documents on “bad parenting” from my internship at CPS (I figured I could change the names from the documents but let me know if I should even use them). I was looking on the Texas CPS website and started searching parenting classes on youtube. I was thinking maybe the videos could be useful demonstrating the type of parenting that should be done (i.e., neoliberal parenting) and a lesson plan for parenting. I am still trying to get in contact with people from CPS that could email me some pamphlets or something on expectations on parenting. As of right now I have a calendar that is given to parents that has parenting advice on it (I’ll show you in office hours because I think it could be useful). I found a sections called “father facts” on the CPS website that talks about how having fathers more involved is better for children which could be helpful? Besides the two text that were mentioned in my research proposal, I have found a book in the library called Essays on Neoliberalism, the Family and Popular Culture which I’m hoping will help me look for more articles (I’m hoping the footnotes will help). I need your help on choosing the type of project this assignment will be. Like I’m not sure if I should write the 15 page paper, or do a podcast, or a short film etc. I feel like I have already mentioned this but I am asking co-workers from CPS for pamphlets on parents, I’ll be using the library to find text on neoliberal parenting, I’d like to show videos for the presentation at the end of the semester just to be creative. I think the pamphlets, CPS website and parenting class videos can show how CPS evaluates families parenting. Also, by researching for texts on different types of parenting will be able to answer how CPS and minority families have different values. These differences show how minority families are much more affected by CPS evaluations of what is deemed “good parenting” because if they do not meet the expected norms of “good parenting” then, these minority families are more likely to have their children removed from the home and be surveilled. I am not sure if that makes sense, so far that is my progress on the research project.
Lopez’s Comments:
Judy, I’m worried that your going into many different directions. So, I think it is a good idea for you to look at the materials available through CPS. You might consider wanting to do a content analysis of the materials found on YouTube. At this point I don’t think it you will find materials that are explicitly talking about neoliberal parenting, however you can do an analysis of these materials and look for things that constitute neoliberal parenting. Remember to think through these analytical bifurcations as to how good and bad parenting is described by child protective services.
