This week, I collected screenshots and links of Bowdoin promoting its world class, liberal arts education. This portion of the research is more artistic in terms of interpreting what is going on. However, the themes are still relevant, which is individuality, free market\/trade of ideas, entrepreneurial spirit, and productivity.\"\"<\/span><\/p>\n

What is your initial impression of the data?<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

My initial impression of the data is how well Bowdoin markets itself. I noticed how Bowdoin really paints itself as an elite institution by its alumni success, the connections with prominent companies, Washington DC., and the happiness and success of its current students. As a current Bowdoin student, I can see how people really fare here, how people go through tough times, and how much work people put into their projects\/goals. In the social media platforms, I see all smiles, a lot of diversity, and accomplishments. <\/span><\/p>\n

How have the data you have collected this week changed\/progressed your thinking about your research project?<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

I guess in seeing how well Bowdoin markets itself vs what it really like is here, I began to realize that this creation of the ideal type of based on a neoliberal assumption that things are going well due to certain qualifications. Bowdoin is an incredibly flawed institution. Bowdoin is also an amazing institution. However, in putting its best foot forward, Bowdoin creates an unrealistic portrayal of itself that all students can become successful and bring positive change in the world–as such, those who enter the school who share that idea or buy into that idea can work towards that goal. Of course, there are many factors as play, such as the racial and socioeconomic background of the student, the type of interactions they have here at Bowdoin, and how much the student feels like he\/she belongs here. <\/span><\/p>\n

What challenges did you encounter while collecting the data?<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

The challenges I had while collecting this data was going through all the social media pages and be bombarded with pictures of cute animals or the Bowdoin Log (not that special, but the marketing for it is great), and lots of athletic recognition. I also had to screenshot the pages and drag them into this page while it is not in great resolution. <\/span><\/p>\n

What are your next steps?<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

My next steps are to tie all of my work together in my visual podcast.<\/span><\/p>\n
