I want to look at patterns of immigration in the neoliberal era and how they are rationalized and demonized. I am particularly interested in migrants doing care work and how that has becom the gender dynamics of how that sphere has become a market. I will look into writings on labor immigration and care work, and I will further refine my ideas as I look further. I seek to answer the questions: How do patterns of contemporary migrations relate to patterns of colonization in the western hegemonic view? How do people reconcile neoliberal contradictions with their everyday lives?

Comments:

This is an interesting topic, Jackie. And yes you will need to narrow down your focus. A couple of questions:

1- Do you want to look at care work done by immigrants in the US? If that’s the case, it might be interesting to look at immigrants’ home countries as well (e.g. Philippines). Just an idea/

2- What aspects of neoliberalism are you intending to focus on? what do you mean by “neoliberal contradictions”? You can go back to Harvey’s book and see if there are certain themes in that book which would be related to your topic.

I do not know if you’ve taken Prof. Lopez immigration course but you can always ask him for recommendations for sources. I am attaching an article here which I hope would help you frame your final project. You should use their bibliography as well.

https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Joya_Misra/publication/267974362_The_Globalization_of_Carework_Immigration_Economic_Restructuring_and_the_World-System/links/5582e46f08ae12bde6e637ef/The-Globalization-of-Carework-Immigration-Economic-Restructuring-and-the-World-System.pdf

Also, are you planning to do library research? or podcast? or something else?

I look forward to reading your final project.

Project Summary: In no more than 200 words, provide a brief description of your project, including the key questions your project attempts to answer and a brief discussion of how you intend to answer those questions. Deadline: March 1st Friday, 11:59 pm Sorry this is late, I was sick and my brain was fuzzy.
