Belonging By Amani Hite

Belonging is a video piece that takes elements from Maine (Bowdoin College) and Maryland (Baltimore City) and my identity in both places to juxtapose the life that I live in each place. These short videos reflect what my life consist of when I’m in each place. The actual footage reflects nature-filled landscaped and images of my body to further define my relationship with each of these places. This piece is a way for me to piece together my identity, while also restructuring it to see how it might change if I navigated Baltimore the way that I navigated Bowdoin and vice versa. The audio portion of this piece comes from family, friends, Baltimore City sounds, and Bowdoin/Maine sounds. I envision these videos projected on to the front of this old apartment building that sits on North Avenue, one of Baltimore’s busiest streets. North Avenue is not only a main street but a defining area in Baltimore as it has shaped me as a person and as an artist.
