Portraits of Women: 15th Century to Present

Welcome to our exhibition!

This gallery aims to explore the instances when women are the subjects of portraiture, delving into how the artist, male or female, chooses to follow along with or defy those canonical stereotypes for the female subject. By redefining what we see as portraiture, along with visual analysis centered around gender, race, and other aspects of the varied representations of women in our collection, we draw conclusions about the female subject’s role in art throughout history.
