Assistive Technology Tip: Try Word Online to Transcribe Audio Recordings

Did you know that Word Online can transcribe audio recordings? The transcribe feature uses artificial intelligence to convert speech to a text transcript and can identify each speaker individually. After uploading a recorded conversation or interview, you can revisit parts of the recording by playing back the time stamped audio and edit the transcription to make corrections. You can then save the full transcript as a Word document.

To use Bowdoin’s online version of Word, visit office365.bowdoin.edu. Word will be available in the “Apps” menu.

There are two ways to transcribe speech.

  1. Upload an audio file. (supported audio files – .wav, .mp4, .m4a, .mp3)
  2. Record directly in Word.

Visit Microsoft’s knowledge base article, “Transcribe Your Recordings” for instructions how to:

  • record in Word.
  • upload an audio file.
  • interact with the transcript.
  • share the transcript and recording.
  • system requirements and language availability.

Note: Bowdoin accounts do not have a limit on the number of hours a month that can be transcribed. Microsoft may change this in the future.
