Tips for a Calm End of the Semester

by Roxanne Donovan, founder of WellAcademic

… This is the time when the number of things that need to get done far exceeds the hours available to do them.

The pull is to accelerate: to forgo sleep and squeeze as much work as possible into every waking minute.

… these behaviors have problematic physical, psychic, and interpersonal consequences.

There’s a better way.

  • Instead of speeding up, slow down
  • prioritize sleep
  • take 10-minute breaks every 60 minutes
  • schedule no-work lunch hours
  • go for a stroll around campus
  • leave work behind at 5 PM

As counterintuitive as it may seem, these self-care practices increase focus, reducing the time it takes to do all those tasks on your list.

Slowing down also results in less fatigue and frustration and more calm and connection – a state we all deserve to be in more.
