BCLT Teaching Triangles

The Teaching Triangles program provides faculty with an opportunity to gain new insight into their teaching and students’ learning through a non-evaluative, formative process of reciprocal class visits and reflection. The three people in a triangle agree to visit one class session for each participant over the course of a semester and meet to discuss what they learn from their visits about their own teaching. Triangles are created to connect faculty in different departments. All first year faculty participating in a teaching triangle are matched with faculty who have completed the faculty fellows program. The goal is to create a respectful, reciprocal, reflective dialogue on teaching and learning.
Mid-Semester Course Analysis
This approach provides instructors with rich qualitative feedback from their students at a midpoint in the semester. Faculty and students have the opportunity to reflect on the teaching and learning environment and inform the second half of the course.
The BCLT staff member meets with the course instructor to discuss their observations of the class and what they are curious to know from their students. They will spend about 30 minutes working with the students during one class without the instructor present. The students will work in small groups to answer the following questions (which may be adapted depending on the course instructor’s interests for this process):
- What are you doing to help your learning in this course?
- What are you doing to hinder your learning in this course?
- What could you be doing to improve your learning in this course?
- What helps your learning in this course?
- What hinders your learning in this course?
- What suggestions do you have to improve learning in this course?
The BCLT staff member will write a report of the themes and insights shared by by students anonymously and discuss and the results with the course instructor in a one-on-one confidential meeting.
