SOS outreach

@SOSoutreach works to provide underserved urban youth on the West coast with the ability to ski and snowboard through day, multi-day, and semester long programs in Seattle, Tahoe, and Denver. Students learn to ski or snowboard while developing leadership, problem solving skills, and self-confidence.12

 

 


 

Citykids

@CityKidsWP serves under-resourced students from Washington DC and introduces them to outdoor recreation over a period of six years. Starting in sixth grade, students participate in after-school programs during the academic year and summer camps where they hike, canoe, and learn wilderness skills. City Kids strives to teach students leadership, transferable job skills, and conflict resolution.13

@CNIkids is a Los Angeles based organization that educates urban children, families, and their communities through experiences in nature. Students go on hikes in city parks, participate in urban nature hunts, and learn about their local environment.14

@OutdoorAfro is an organization that uses social media to connect African-Americans to each other and to the great outdoors. Working to alter the false perception that black people do not have a relationship with nature, Outdoor Afro strives to shift the visual representation of outdoor recreation in social media and the news.15

 


 

Brian Deka

@Deka: Brian Deka Paupaw is the Executive Director of Hoods for Woods. As a native of Brooklyn, New York, Brian is an avid surfer and snowboarder who is very passionate about bringing inner city students outside.16

@First Ascenders provides students in Denver, CO with the opportunity to rock climb through a series of six-week after-school courses. Through climbing, students develop self-confidence, physical fitness, and a greater awareness of the outdoors.17

@GrowNYC is an organization that works to incorporate environmental programs (such as recycling, local food markets, gardens, and education) in New York City. Grow NYC works with local schools to take inner city students hiking, teaches them how to plant trees and build gardens, and the importance of recycling and healthy eating.18

Great Outdoor Adventure Trips is a non-profit organization based in Greenville, South Carolina whose mission is to bring at-risk-youth outside. On their blog, they   tell stories about their successes and struggles, the impact they have on kids, and where they hope to go from here.19
