There is quite an extensive network of grassroots organizing that targets the issues that surround the school-to-prison pipeline. The members involved range from parents to youth to other active members of the community who are advocating for education reform. Many of the grassroots organizations that are attempting to dismantle the school-to-prison pipeline contain broader goals and hope to address a range of social justice issues through their work. Many of the organizations share common strategies including an initial attack on the zero tolerance policies, an implementation of restorative justice practices or less extreme forms of punishment, and the creation of a safe school environment to replace the jail-like atmosphere that includes metal detectors, police officials, etc.

Many of these organizations are led by individuals of color or low-income because these groups are unfairly affected by the injustices of the school system at a higher frequency than others. I believe that the organizations have a variety of messages that they are attempting to spread, but these include making the public aware of how the school-to-prison pipeline directly targets students of color, reduces academic success, and is ultimately encouraging certain students to give up on education.

These organizations have definitely achieved some successes including the implementation of restorative justice practices, the reduction of suspensions and expulsions, and the creation of a more comfortable school environment. Challenges are obviously also prevalent, however. Struggles include getting the policy-makers and school administrations to work with them, developing strategies to target the current policies, and educating the public about the reality and severity of these issues.
