Ella Baker’s participatory democracy coupled with guided participation is a great structure for grassroots organizations that want to focus on including the voices of students, parents and educators. I recommend this model to other cities who are also facing high rates of disparity from zero tolerance policies such as St. Louis. Though there is little data on high turnover rates in grassroots organizations such as Students Deserve, the student’s ability, as cited by LAUSD student Sarah, to engage with group leadership without a need for tenure increased Students Deserve’s creative thought capacity (Jayne, 2019). Students Deserve has seen victories that grassroots organizations can learn from. Students Deserve’s accomplishments are encouragement that these policy changes are within reach, and there are effective ways to organize around this issue.
