The BMORE Caucus

BMORE is a grassroots organization made up of educators that are committed to advancing quality public schools in Baltimore. BMORE is made up of a steering committee and has community partnerships with both local and national caucus networks. They are a caucus of the Baltimore Teachers Union that also works to transform the BTU to a social justice union. They work to use education as a tool for liberation and functioning in society. BMORE has a commitment to dismantling structural racism, empowering educator voices of color, and working with a power to the people method. The BMORE caucus was founded out of frustration with the Baltimore Teachers Union. It started with informal meetings between teachers who would read, visit Rank-and-File Educator caucuses in other cities and discuss their visions of Baltimore Schools and after developing a common image the group became BMORE (BMORE FAQS)

BMORE organizers collaborated with the Teachers Democracy Project (TDP), a parent from the Parent Community Advisory Board (PCAB) and a community advocate in spring of 2018 to put forth the Equity Policy and Platform. This was a platform and campaign demanding: curriculum and teaching that’s relevant to students’ lives and meets learning needs of all, healthy school culture through restorative practices, parents, community members and teachers as vital voices in schools, equitable funding for Maryland’s public schools, and sustainable community schools and wrap around services. In early 2018, BMORE also put forth a list of demands under student safety and the Cold Weather Crisis demanding that students may only learn in classrooms warmer than 60 degrees, principals taking and reporting temperatures, contingency plans with local government and a communication plan to make families aware of emergency issues. BMORE has launched other areas of action in schools including Black Lives Matter week in schools, Police Free schools, and school and student funding.
