Context

St. Paul Minnesota houses over 285,000 people and 67 public schools. 33% of children attending school are of Asian descent and 30% of students self-identify as Black (Saint Paul Public Schools). The diverse demographics of St. Paul public schools need and deserve a culturally relevant pedagogy and educators dedicated to fostering an inclusive classroom. This case study examines the work of The St. Paul Federation of Educators and their passion and promise to create equitable opportunities for all children in and out of the classroom. The organizing strategies of Social Justice Unionism and Social Movement Unionism are highlighted and heavily utilized by The St. Paul Federation of Teachers. The School’s St. Paul’s Children Deserve, a proposal created by members of the SPFE, demonstrates the work of purposeful organizing and meaningful and lasting change for the public school system and greater community. The work of The St. Paul Federation of Educators can be adapted toward any teacher union throughout the country to support and improve the public school system.
