As LGBT rights vary between states, between religions, and between communities, advocacy for individuals needs to come from local groups and organizations. Grassroots organizations are one of the primary ways LGBT students are able to find structured advocacy and local resources within their community that provide for their more specific experience. These groups and organizations frequently work with communities, schools, and teachers to promote awareness and inclusion.
The Audre Lorde Project is a community organizing center in NYC that primary works with LGBT people of color. They are concerned with discrimination on a community and legal level, and try to voice and reduce inequality.
BAGLY is a Boston based activism group that helps connect LGBT youth to local resources. The group is student led and focuses on community, health, and social support.
Equality Maine is an organization which promotes equality for LGBT people and families, both socially and under the law. They promote safe schools and help LGBT couples get married in Maine.

Gay Grassroots of Northwest Florida
Gay Grassroots is a group focused on gaining support and leadership for LBGT people in Northwest Florida. They try to expose and remove inequalities faced by LGBT people through activism.
GSAFE works with schools and teachers in Wisconsin in order for them to be more LGBT friendly. They train teachers, support gay-straight alliances, and support youth leadership.
Heartland Trans* Wellness Group
Heartland Trans* Wellness Group provides and directs resources to the trans* community in the Midwest. They are based in Cincinnati and provide education and foster activism.
Outfront Minnesota provides leadership and local programs for LGBT people in Minnesota. In providing a space for other programs, their goal is for LGBT people to have equal rights.
Outright Youth is a community center that promotes various LGBT groups in North Carolina. They promote and provide spaces both for LGBT youth and adults and help educate their community on LGBT issues.
