Arctic policy concerning Indigenous peoples and tourism is made by the Arctic Council which is composed of the eight Arctic states (Canada, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Russia, Sweden, and the United States), six Permanent Participants (Aleut, Arctic Athabaskan, ICC, Saami, RAIPON, and Gwich’in), and several non-Arctic state observers. You can get involved in Arctic policy in the following ways:
- Write letters to your legislatures about how they incorporate Arctic policy into their work. Advocate for increased attention towards Indigenous interests in the Arctic!
- Become more educated about Indigenous peoples in the Arctic. You can learn more here!
- If you choose to visit the Arctic, ensure that you only partake in sustainable and socially-responsible tourism. Research your tourism options.
- Donate to/support these organizations who are committed to supporting Indigenous peoples:
- Permanent Participants of the Arctic Council:
- Indigenous Secretariat (this is the primary body organizing Indigenous representation on the Arctic Council)
- Tribal Collaboration (Alaska):
