“How Your Filipino Science Fiction Novel Will Be Adapted for Film”

Just read Mark Galarrita’s “How Your Filipino Science Fiction Novel Will Be Adapted for Film.” An interesting satirical piece that touches on issues of representation of non-Anglo/U.S. work inĀ  publication of science fiction. Recommend checking it out! Here’s the link: https://www.mcsweeneys.net/articles/how-your-filipino-science-fiction-novel-will-be-adapted-for-film

Jeez, this was equal parts funny and kind of depressing. There’s a point there. I listed my top 5 films/series on my website and every single one had a white protagonist at the forefront. I didn’t do it intentionally, I don’t think I can relate to the experiences of any of them. But sadly, the big budget cinematics doesn’t go to the diverse or the under-represented, even in sci-fi. They got me for the tech, often times the character storylines are far less memorable without it.

How’d you come across this article? Do you have any recommendations for works (sci-fi or other) that you’ve really enjoyed for their honest depiction of diverse experiences? I’m glad this is a topic we’ve tackled a bit in this course.
