In this essay I draw theoretical parallels and structural connections between United States neoliberalism and conservative-traditional notions of gender, particularly as binary and patriarchal. By analyzing the language employed by conservative ‘pro-family’ political lobbying groups, I will show that preservation of traditional family structures is actively connected to market ideals. Groups such as the Family Research Council, the Eagle Forum, and the Campaign for Working Families use language in their mission statements and publications that both promotes the market as an ally in their fight for the preservation of ‘family values’ and occasionally attempt to sway individual corporations acting in the market to demonstrate those values. At the same time, there are many similarities between the adherence to both the market and notions of binary biological gender as inherent natural existences when they are both entirely socially manufactured.
