This week, I finally heard back from one of my sources. I scheduled an interview for early next week. However, I have not heard back from the two other sources I reached out to. This is proving to be a large problem for my research. I am not shifting to investigating more news sources instead. But, I am going to continue to reach out to more faculty from the USM webpage. I plan to email the University’s President to see if he would answer a few questions for me as well.
My impression of the data has not really changed. But, I need to delve deeper into the data to form my analysis. I am still working on finding more academic articles and news sources. My first priority is interviewing Susan next week. I need to complete the IRB form as well.

This article from the Bangor Daily News shows the reaction of students and faculty to the layoffs and down-sizing of departments. Students and faculty were chanting, in the hallway outside the office of Provost Michael Stevenson. This article is valuable because it references Susan Feiner, who is one of the people I am interviewing for this project. She played a large role that day in the hallway promoting the idea to block the hallway. There also appears to be a lot of neoliberal language throughout the piece.

“USM President David Flanagan said cutting 50 faculty positions will close $6 million of a total $16 million budget gap for the next fiscal year.” As the quote mentions, this article examines how USM is handling their financial and the ultimately, how the college is laying off professor’s and downsizing departments. This news article provides a different viewpoint on the story of USM. This provides more specific details on the situation. The first quote highlights the specific data that is given in the article which will allow me to further analyze the institution.
Comments:
Thanks for this, Hannah. I am glad to hear that you will be able to talk to Susan Feiner. She might be able to put you in touch with more people. You should definitely ask her about this.
Also, you do not need to worry about IRB form ( I handled that). But I need you to send me your consent form asap.
