Log 2

I had an extremely busy week, so unfortunately, I did not get as much research done this week as I had hoped to. The rest of my weekend is relatively free, however, so I plan to catch up by doing several more hours before Monday to get back on track.

I am currently working through the book that you recommended to me (Rapp’s Testing Women, Testing the Fetus), and that has been my primary research for the week. Thus, I only have one new citation for my annotated bibliography, but I will be sure to compensate by doing extra citations next week. I hope this is ok!

Rapp, Rayna. Testing Women, Testing the Fetus: The Social Impact of Amniocentesis in America. New York, NY: Routledge, 2000.

Rapp’s book is proving to be very helpful to my research.  Its exploration of the “geneticization” of the modern American family is fascinating and also lends itself strikingly well to my paper’s focus on neoliberalism. The book delves into the differences in experiences that women of particular social and economic backgrounds have in interacting with prenatal testing practices. Ethnographies of pregnant women (in my experience) are relatively underrepresented, and this book is a valuable resource that fills this gap. I plan to use data and excerpts from this book to support the arguments that I make about external market factors and actors exercising control over women’s bodies, particularly during reproductive activities.

I am glad to hear that you found the book helpful, Meghan. That’s one of my favorite academic works.
It is fine that you have only one source this week. Make sure to have a bit longer annotated bibliography for next week.
