Rossett, Claudia. “THE FREE MARKET AND CHILE; AN ABORTED ECONOMIC TEST.” The New York Times, July 3, 1983. Accessed April 5, 2019.

This article discusses the ways in which the Chilean miracle failed. In particular, the author notes the two-year depression that followed the implementation of the economic policies. One thing I thought was interesting about this article that I think is important to my research is that Rossett highlights how the rhetoric around Chilean miracle is rooted in the idea that it is a sort of “laboratory test aimed at satisfying the intellectual curiosity of the general.” However, in reality this is not the case. As I frame this Chilean miracle as one of the clearest cut examples of neoliberal policy, I believe it is important to ensure the listeners of my podcast understand that these policies were not created in perfect, idealistic conditions. The Chicago boys worked to denationalize industries and businesses controlled by the state under Allende’s socialist regime. However, the military junta under Pinochet did not completely trust free market policies because of their decentralized nature. This article adds an interesting perspective because it was written while Pinochet was still in power.

Christian, Shirley. “INTERNATIONAL REPORT; Free-Market Lessons Of Chile’s ‘Chicago Boys’.” The New York Times, October 8, 1990. Accessed April 5, 2019.

This article was written after the other New York Times article; however, it takes an almost less progressive stance towards the Chilean Miracle. It recounts how the Chicago boys are being sought out by other countries in order to advise on privatization policies. It delves into a bit of the background behind the Chicago boys, their education at the University of Chicago, and their belief in free-market, Milton Friedman economic reform. Another interesting thing about this article was that it was written in 1990, but Pinochet was still in power. Christian says, “If Pinochet falls, the future of Chile’s free market program would be even less certain.” This piece was written in October of 1990. Although Pinochet remained in charge of the military (until 1998), democratic elections were reinstated in Chile in 1990 and Patricio Aylwin was elected president. Juxtaposing this piece and the other New York Times article will be extremely helpful in my research. Both articles provide unique global perspectives from the time in which these events were occurring.

This is good, Sydney. A couple of comments: As you collect more sources, make sure to compare them with each other. Also, you are saying that both articles will be helpful for your research but you are not telling us how. You should go deeper into the relevance of the articles for your project (you should say something more specific than “both articles provide unique global perspectives…”) Doing so would help you better frame your project as well.

Also, the annotated bibliography should be an addition to your reflection on the data you collect throughout the week (so “weekly research log” plus “annotated bibliography”). Next week, make sure you do both.
