This project examines the use of neoliberal frameworks by youth environmental activists. After establishing the ways in which neoliberalism is connected to the environment and environmental activism, the perspectives of environmental activists are interrogated for the presence, absence, or varying use of neoliberal perspectives. Interviews were conducted with five environmental activists who are students at Bowdoin College. Each was asked questions about their perspectives on activism to garner an understanding of how they see their activism situated within social institutions. Respondents were asked about the roles of individuals, government administrations, corporations, and capitalism as they relate to environmentalism. Respondents demonstrated diverse perspectives and varying uses of neoliberal frameworks. While some respondents directly addressed neoliberalism and pushed back against neoliberal structures and policies, others presented a less focused mindset that both embodied and resisted neoliberalism. These varying mindsets are deconstructed to understand how they may impact the activism being performed.
