Engaging Ideas Reading Group with John Paul Kanwit
Please join us this semester for a reading group on John Bean and Dan Melzer’s Engaging Ideas: The Professor’s Guide to Integrating Writing, Critical Thinking, and Active Learning in the Classroom. Bean and Melzer’s book provides the best guidance I have seen on how to foster critical thinking through well-designed and sequenced writing assignments. The authors also provide a wealth of practical information about how to grade and comment on student writing.
We will meet twice a month for an hour beginning in early February and continuing through the end of the semester (skipping the spring break weeks). Participants will be provided with a paperback copy of the book (also available as an e-text through the Bowdoin Library). If you are interested in joining us, email John Paul Kanwit.
Spring Teaching Triangles
Interested in a Spring 2025 Teaching Triangle. (6-hour time commitment)

The Teaching Triangles program provides faculty with an opportunity to gain new insight into their teaching and students’ learning through a non-evaluative, formative process of reciprocal class visits and reflection. The three people in a triangle agree to visit one class session for each participant over the course of a semester and meet to discuss what they learn from their visits about their own teaching. The goal is to create a respectful, reciprocal, reflective dialogue on teaching and learning.
