Join the Bates Taking Responsibility Learning Group (TRLG) and Wabanaki REACH as we explore the impacts of colonization and then reflect on how we can address past and present harms. Some of our second session will include a discussion of the Wabanaki Bowdoin Bates Colby Collaborative (WBBC Collaborative), the now-abandoned relationship between the Wabanaki nations and the three colleges.
Our Goals
Through heart-centered truth-telling and critical analysis, we will work with our Wabanaki REACH partners to:
- Understand the deep history of Wabanaki and Maine relationships.
- Analyze colonization and its ongoing impact on our institution.
- Build Capacity to overcome obstacles to truth and healing.
- Take Action by exploring resources and successful models for change.
Day 1: Friday, May 8, 2026 9am-1pm: Wabanaki REACH facilitated workshop
This will be in-person at Bates. The first part of the day will include the Interactive map exercise along with additional programming that has not been offered in the interactive map workshop. The day will build from the map exercise and move to new content. Lunch will be provided.
Day 2: Friday May 15, 2026 9am – 1pm: Decolonizing Bates
Bates and Wabanaki REACH facilitated
This will be in-person at Bates. This workshop will focus on the history of the WBBC Collaborative and Bates-Wabanaki relations. Lunch will be provided.
Day 3: Friday, May 22, 2026 9 – 12pm: Virtual (on Zoom): Moving forward: Exploring our Future and Our Options

This will be fully virtual. Our group will be formed by the shared experiences of our first two days together and we will move in community in shared understanding toward a future that centers truth and healing.
