Turn Questions about AI into Meaningful Inquiry

As colleges and universities continue navigating the role of artificial intelligence in teaching and learning, many educators are looking for ways to study its impact systematically rather than relying on assumptions or isolated experimentation. “Connecting AI Questions to AI Evidence: Research Approaches to Teaching and Learning” is a six-session online workshop series from AAC&U and the American Psychological Association that will help you develop a research project focused on AI’s role in teaching and student learning. The 90-minute sessions will take place every other month from November 2026 through September 2027, giving you time between sessions to apply what you learn to your own project. Grounded in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL), a systematic approach to studying how teaching practices influence student learning, the series will guide participants through the full process of inquiry, from identifying meaningful questions to designing ethical studies, collecting evidence, analyzing findings, and communicating results. Sessions will explore how to transform broad interests into researchable questions; develop frameworks for studying AI’s role in teaching and student learning; design effective and ethical approaches to data collection; interpret findings responsibly; and sustain research and collaboration over time.

Throughout the series, you will apply concepts to your own context and work toward a complete, ready-to-implement research project examining AI’s role in teaching and student learning. The project can serve as a foundation for future presentations, publications, or use within your institution.

No prior research experience or experience with the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning is required.
