His most recent release, The Alignment Problem, is a nuanced investigation of the ethics and safety challenges confronting the field of AI and a portrait of the community of researchers working to address them. It has been chosen by Bowdoin’s Hastings Initiative for AI and Humanity as a community book read. The New York Times included it at the top of its list of the best books about artificial intelligence and said, “If you’re going to read one book on artificial intelligence, this is the one.”

Faculty Workshop – Monday October 6, 11:45 a.m

If you would like to attend please fill out this form.

Artificial Intelligence, The Alignment Problem, and Higher Education will be part of the effort to understand the ways that the rapidly developing generative AI will impact our campus community and how a liberal arts college can prepare students, faculty, and staff for this new reality. During this 75 minute workshop, he will discuss his recent computational neuroscience research regarding LLMs, bias and ethics, his books The Alignment Problem and Algorithms to Live By and his hands on experience in the field. Brian will address specific faculty concerns regarding the challenges facing higher education in the time of AI. This workshop will be directed at an intelligent and interested but non-specialist audience including administration and faculty involved in strategic planning. Content is designed for those with some prior knowledge about AI, but not necessarily a technical expertise of AI.”
