Youth Activism in Social Media

Project Hip Hop 

Project Hip Hop is a youth-led organization based in Roxbury. Viewing art as a tool for campaign organizing, they combine art and activism. In this way, they train and develop young people into both artists and activists for social change in their communities. This Facebook page updates its follows on the organization’s events they are planning and the issues they are tackling.

El Movimiento

El Movimiento is a youth-led organization that addresses the lack of ethnic studies content in the public school curriculum. They advocate for educational justice and confront the the unjust system which neglects the important histories of the diverse U.S. student population. This chapter of El Movimiento holds events in and around Boston, and this Facebook page shares the times and places of these events with followers.

Youth AffodabiliT Coalition

This Facebook Page updates followers on the progress with the campaign for the “Youth Pass,” which they demand should only cost $10/month, be available for all youth ages 12-21, and have no time or day restrictions. The campaign seeks to create more access for youth to use public transportation in Boston.

Boston Student Union

The Boston Student Union is a youth-led organization of Boston Public School students that strives to improve the quality of school climate and education within the Boston Public School system by advocating for student voice in the decision-making process.  The group holds “Town Halls” to discuss issues, and this Facebook Page serves to inform followers on the challenges they are addressing.

Beantown Society

Based in Jamaica Plain, this youth-led organization aims to unite Boston youth across all walks of life in order to end youth violence. Their  after school program as well as workshops and other events are youth-run. This Facebook page offers pictures of youth programming events and updates followers on the group’s happenings.

Dorchester Bay Youth Force (@DBYouthForce)

The DBYF program is a youth leadership initiative that strives to develop Dorchester teens into  community leaders and community organizers. These teens then train other Dorchester teens to also be leaders and organizers in their neighborhoods. They have participated and organized events such as the Youth Job Rally, the Revenue Campaign, and a campaign to rally youth to vote in local elections. This twitter page updates followers on the group’s latest actions and events.

Get Hip

A collaboration between the Southern Jamaica Plain Health Center’s Health Promotion Center  and young men of color, Get Hip is a grassroots organization dedicated to addressing the racial injustice which occurs in the community. The organization holds programming to educate members on the impact of racism on health and advocate for health equity for themselves and their communities. This Facebook page updates the group’s followers on social justice issues and the ways Get Hip is addressing them.

Student Immigrant Movement

This Facebook page updates followers on events held by the Boston chapter of the Student Immigrant Movement, and a youth-led, non-profit organization that seeks to create equal opportunity and equal access to higher education for immigrant students. Each year they hold a Student Immigrant Movement Camp, during which they train immigrant youth to become leaders for social change in their communities.
