Grassroots Organizations

  • OutFront Minnesota is a grassroots organization founded by community members over 20 years ago that has grown to address a number of queer-related issues in the state. They hope to be a leader in “moving the state toward full equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer people, and bringing allies into the movement.” They have the Minnesota Safe Schools for all Coalition, “a group of more than 140 education, disability, youth, religious, LGBTQ and social service organizations”, that provide parents, students and educators with information on policies and practices that “create and maintain safe, supportive school climates”.  http://www.outfront.org/safeschools
  • GSA Network is an organization that provides support and guidence to high schools forming Gay Straight Alliances. They started primarily in the San Francisco Bay Area but now are connected to GSAs in schools across the state. They also are politically active, pushing for law that create safer schools for LGBT identified students. GSA Network has a number of positions for youth leaders to be closely involved with the organization’s activities.  http://www.gsanetwork.org/about-us/history
  • New Alternatives NYC is a group that works to support homeless LGBT youth living in New York City in a number of ways. One of the services they provide is tutoring, including SAT tutoring.  http://www.newalternativesnyc.org
  • Gay Grassroots of Northwest Florida is a group that advocates for anti-discrimination policies, engages the community in the creation of GSA clubs in schools, and works to support homeless LGBT youth. http://www.ggnwfl.com/advocacy.html
  • Safe Schools NC: Advancing Equality in Education provides resources to educators, parents, and students about how to take on queer related problems in the school setting, from unsupportive school administrators, to bullying, to helping parents support their LGBTQ child.  http://safeschoolsnc.com
  • FIERCE is a group with the mission to “building the leadership and power of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) youth of color in New York City.” They have campaigns to create safe spaces for queer youth and respond to school bullying.  http://fiercenyc.org/about
  • The Gay Straight Alliance for Safe Schools is an organization in Wisonson that incorporates high school students into its leadership in order to best address the issues facing students in schools. They host educator trainings to help create safer schools in the state.  http://www.gsafewi.org/
  • BAGLY is the Boston Alliance of Gay Lesbian Bisexual Transgender Youth, a “youth-led, adult supported” organization, a group that works to create a community and advocate about issues that face queer youth in the Boston area.
