Stoneman Douglas High School

One school shooting, in particular, sparked a movement towards greater gun control, and the impact of these students’ work has been unbelievable. On February 14th, 2018, 19-year-old Nickolas Cruz walked into Stoneman Douglas High School armed with an AR-15 semi-automatic rifle. He went on a shooting rampage where he killed 17 and severely wounded 14. This was a truly terrifying event that students and teachers at Parkland had to witness. The pain and fear they had to have felt are indescribable. In previous school shootings, the sentiment of “thoughts and prayers” was the only thing felt following the events. This school shooting was different because the students at the school stepped up and began the “Never Again MSD” movement. The students believed that prayers were not only needed for the pain and suffering, but instead acting to ensure this does not happen to another school. Every day following the attack students fought for gun control in America. In the wake of change, students from Parkland were able to achieve extraordinary things, and this movement has shown how influential students can be in making positive change for this country.
