March For Our Lives

“March for our Lives” is an organization created by the students who survived the fatal shooting at Stoneman Douglas High School in 2018. Their mission is “To harness the power of young people across the country to fight for sensible gun violence prevention policies that save lives.” The students say, “We cannot allow one more person to die by senseless gun violence. We cannot allow one more family to wait for a call or text that never comes. We cannot allow the normalization of gun violence to continue. We must create a safe and compassionate nation for all of us.” They organized the most massive single day of protests against gun violence in history. YES, students did this! The “March for our Lives” protest was on March 24th, 2018, and millions came together and protested for the lack of leaders’ actions. Another area of organizing the students engaged in this grassroots movement was a cross country tour to encourage voter registration. They successfully got 50,000 people to register to vote on their trip, which is impactful to politicians’ future in the United States and what legislation gets passed. In the 2018 midterm election, there was a 47% increase in youth voter turnout! These youth caused 46 NRA-backed candidates to lose that election, proving that young people have the power to reshape this nation.
