Mass shootings have become too much of a norm in the American school system. Guns in schools is a problem that only plagues Americans, and the students put their lives at risk when going to school. Since the 1999 Columbine High School shooting, there have been 11 more deadly events in the American school system.. Sandy Hook Elementary took the lives of 26 people, Stoneman Douglas took the lives of 17, Santa Fe took the lives of 10, Virginia Tech took the lives of 32, Umpqua Community College took the lives of 9, Red Lake took the lives of 7, Oikos University took the lives of 7, West Nickel Mines took the lives of 5, North Illinois took the lives of 5, Santa Monica College took the lives of 5, and Marysville Pilchuck High School took the lives of 4. This is too many lives lost for this not to be an issue taken seriously in education. “For the last 20 years, our students, educators, and parents have lived the reality of school shootings.”
Meanwhile, America’s gun violence epidemic, in the form of mass shootings, gun homicides, non-fatal assaults, unintentional discharges, and firearm suicide, has been infecting America’s school.” Unfortunately, leaders have not adequately addressed these issues, and it costs us the lives of millions of children. There has to be serious action taken, and arming teachers is by no means an acceptable solution.. The idea that a teacher can be trusted with a gun and suddenly act in a situation of danger is absurd. We must take a multifaceted approach where governments are involved and mental health is taken seriously.
