For educators and activists

Here educators can find resources to help them educate themselves and those they work with,  create an environment that is inclusive and welcoming to queer students, and to advocate for the needs of queer students.

GroundSpark, the civil rights media resource non-profit created “Building Support for Schools that Openly Affirm the Diversity of Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity” communications and community organizing guide. This guide provides a comprehensive look at queer issues, language to use in creating a campaign for change (for example: use “students” instead of “kids;” use “harassment” instead of “bullying”), issue-specific messaging advice, and how to grow and ask for support from allied groups. There is a section for organizing within communities of color specifically, and is a great resources for educators who want to create meaningful change in a way that acts in the best interests of queer and trans students with an activist and organizing mindset.

GLSEN, an organization that seeks to end discrimination, harassment, and bullying based on sexual identity and gender identity/expression, put together a survey of school climate in regards to LGBT issues in 2005, and then conducted a similar study in 2015, a decade after the initial report. “Teasing to Torment: School Climate Revisited” looks into student resources, inclusive curricula, and anti-harassment policies and includes teacher perceptions on school climates–ultimately offering recommendations to schools in terms of programming and policy to counter the effects of bias and create “safe and supportive learning environments.” This detailed report of their findings is helpful for educators, parents, activists, and others seeking to understand the current atmosphere for queer students in secondary schools. Although it discusses race-based-harassment, this report is by no means centered on youth of color, and its findings and interpretations reflect that.
