Baltimore Organizations and Programs

COR Health Institute

With a strong focus on empowering young Black men and other youth, COR Health Institute aims to promote physical and psychological well-being through such activities as martial arts and other holistic fitness activities. The organization has many programs specifically tailored to teach children how to live healthy lives. But COR Health Institute also serves adult community members. Through a 300 Man March movement, the organization has been promoting nonviolence by recruiting and working with men in the communities it serves.

Mentoring Male Teens in the Hood

This organization was started in 1996 by Cameron E. Miles and served only five young boys. Today, hundreds of young men (who Miles and other organizers call Kings) have gone through the organization. The primary goal of the organization is to keep young Kings in Baltimore away from negativity, including gangs and violence. Young men are encouraged to always perform well in school and refrain from negative behaviors. There are often trips to different places within and beyond the state of Maryland, including trips to Howard University and Morehouse. Young men are also given meals when they attend programs, and are encouraged to form bonds by attending such things as sporting events.

Youth Dreamers

Youth Dreamers is a partially youth-led organization that aims to serve youth in Baltimore. Through providing a space for youth to engage in positive activities, the original organizers hoped to deter young people from becoming involved in negativity. Since its founding in 2001, Youth Dreamers has served and employed hundreds of youth, and has provided thousands of service learning hours to city students. Though undergoing a change in the way they serve young people, Youth Dreamers continues to provide opportunity for youth. Most recently, the group has began to focus on potentially starting a scholarship program that can help students go to college.
