Mridulaben Sarabhai
In a nearly ironic twist of fate, it was the very gender that had been most physically and mentally devastated by Partition violence that would undertake the rescue and rehabilitation of that same gender. Female social workers- headed by the indefatigable Ms. Sarabhai- shouldered the burden of attempting to return the alleged 12,000 Muslim and 25,000 Hindu and Sikh women and girls (these figures are believed to be underestimations) to their “rightful” homes as prescribed by the Indian and Pakistan governments.
