Weekly Research Logs and Annotated Bibliography

Research Logs:

  • Between weeks 7 and 12, each student should provide a weekly reflection (500 words) on the data you have collected to date.
    • What data did you collect?
    • What is your initial impression of the data?
    • How have the data you have collected this week changed/progressed your thinking about your research project?
    • What challenges did you encounter while collecting the data?
    • What are your next steps?

Annotated Bibliography:

  • Between weeks 7 and 12, each student should provide annotated bibliography (2-3 sources) for each week. The deadlines for annotated bibliography are the same as the deadlines for research logs.

Please keep in mind that annotations are NOT the same as abstracts. Abstracts are the purely descriptive summaries often found at the beginning of scholarly journal articles or in periodical indexes. Annotations, in contrast, are descriptive and critical; they may describe the author’s point of view, authority, or clarity and appropriateness of expression.

To create an annotated bibliography

First, locate and record citations to books, periodicals, and documents that may contain useful information and ideas on your topic. Briefly examine and review the actual items. Then choose those works that provide a variety of perspectives on your topic.

Cite the book, article, or document using the appropriate style.

Write a concise annotation that summarizes the central theme and scope of the book or article. Include one or more sentences that (a) evaluate the authority or background of the author, (b) comment on the intended audience, (c) compare or contrast this work with another you have cited, or (d) explain how this work illuminates your bibliography topic.
