Attisani Project Summary

For my final project I plan to explore the politicization of college campuses as it pertains to freedom of speech and belief-shaming, impact endowment investing, and public pressure and perceptions. For someone who has always identified as an Independent, the 2016 elections and the ensuing polarization of American politics made it almost impossible to remain indifferent. Yet, my innate thirst for objectivity and nuance lands me in a unique–and often lonely–position of uncertainty. Countless times in my academic career I have held back questions that derive from nothing more than curiosity, for fear that my classmates or professors may associate my inquiries with conservative politics, and therefore judge or think less of me. Over time and through my numerous classroom discussions about modern society, I have become increasingly interested in why or how college campuses may be limiting intellectual curiosity through the politicization of curriculum and culture. Moreover, public pressure, media coverage, and appearances play a large part in why colleges and universities do what they do. I wish to explore these shifts over time and their potential effects on broader American intellect for future generations.
