Project Summary

We will be analyzing and creating sociological tiktoks. The main questions we seek to answer are:

  • What sociological knowledge is currently accessible public knowledge on TikTok?
  • What information is widespread versus what information is left out?
  • Who are the main agents creating sociological content on TikTok and what are the dominant artistic conventions?
  • How can we increase access to sociological works to proliferate sociological imagination (as Mills would want)?
  • What changes when we translate theory to content (either information lost or new connection made)?
  • How can we use contemporary media and fast-paced consumer-oriented platforms to achieve our goal?
  • Is activism present in the sociological TikToks and, if yes, what shape does it take?

In order to do this, we will review sociology TikTok videos to see what knowledge is currently widely known, analyze the comments on these videos, compare the videos to the referenced works, and create our own content making theory more accessible to a general audience.

Finally, we hope to show our TikToks to our friends who are not involved in the field of sociology to see how they respond to the information and if they are able to relate it to their own lives. We will also use this as a litmus test to make sure that the content is actually accessible, and if needed we will adapt our content.
