Progress Notes Week 11:
In the journal article, U.S. Institutionalized Torture with Impunity: Examining Rape and Sexual Abuse in Custody Through the ICTY Jurisprudence, Allison Rogne, examines rape culture domestically and internationally and how African American women are the most vulnerable to sexual abuse by correctional staff members. She also examines in the U.S. context how rape is treated with impunity which enables correctional officers to sexually abuse women. Within the prison system, women are seen as deserving of punishment, and therefore their rights render invisible within the system. I plan on using this journal article to build my subpoint about the gendering of state punishment which I mentioned in my previous progress notes.
In addition, I am trying to incorporate some of our class readings in my research paper, especially the book about Family Secrets, which Sophia and I are facilitators for next week! I plan on using the culture of silence that Gloria González-López mentions as a subpoint for why women prisoners are afraid to speak out for fear of losing their privileges or being sexually abused again.
What challenges did you encounter while collecting the data?
I did not have enough to work on my research project this week, but I have created time blocks to delve deeper into my research. I also realized that I do not have materials about the privatization of detention centers, and I am in the midst of letting go of this part of my research on focusing my energy on the other ideas.
What are your next steps?
My next step is to complete my annotated bibliographies of all the articles I intend on using in my research. I also plan on meeting with Professor Greene to discuss the new subpoints I would like to include in my paper and overall help constructing a framework.
