New Orleans: Our School at Blair Grocery (OSBG)

(also see tab Scholarly Research) Founded out of Hurricane Katrina and the food and social insecurity facing residents of the Ninth Ward of New Orleans, Nat Turner and other dedicated community members established a high school to employ locals, involve service workers from high schools and colleges, and provide food for the surrounding neighborhood. Guided by the Essential Question of “To what extent are we empowering at-risk youth to take leadership in making New Orleans, Louisiana the City that Ended Hunger?”, OSBG works with a Backwards Design, from end goal back through the steps needed to achieve it, and with experiential and GED-prep curriculum to catch students that would fall through the cracks in a traditional, not immediately applicable schooling environment.
