We agree with the statement that Post-Cold War international security issues are fundamentally different from those of the past, and that there are not many relevant lessons to be learned from that time. Even still though, while the security issues we face in the 21st century are very different from those we have encountered during and before the Cold War, lessons in warfare adaptation, insurgencies, and nuclear armament from the past are still important tools that can be used to address our future and ongoing security challenges. Significant technological advancements, exponential growth in the amount and influence of non-state actors in the global community, and environmental changes are three of the most important reasons for these unprecedented threats to security.
