By the end of the semester, you should compile an annotated bibliography with at least ten sources that you believe will be central to your research projects.

Strong, Wesley “Policing the Campus: Academic Repression, Surveillance, and the Occupy Movement.” JStor 2013 p.16
This source will be helpful in my introduction to set the background for my paper. I am using it as a reference because it contains a statistic that I need to incorporate. The source gives a historical background on intersection between politics and education. Specifically, it looks at student protest and the different points in time when it has been more or less prevalent. The article also discusses the relationship between the upper echelons of society and colleges and universitites. I found it on Jstor.
Abrams, Samuel J “Are Colleges and Universities Becoming Too Liberal?” aei.org October 2020
This source which I found on aei.org provides data that is very helpful for my research. Specifically, I used a quotation about the political breakdown among college professors. The data show that professors are overwhelmingly liberal. The article is helpful for me as I explain why campuses are so politicized.
Morrison, Nick “It’s Not Just Conservative Students Who Are Scared to Speak Out On Campus” Forbes. September 15, 2021
This Forbes article plays an important role in my project. The author discusses how liberal students too feel censored in college classrooms. Maybe surprisingly, the article points out that students of all political affiliations are anxious about how their comments may be perceived. Students are forced to walk on egg shells during discussion for fear of being cancelled. This article adds a different perspective to my essay.
Belkin, Douglas. “Alumni Withold Donations, Demand Colleges Enforce Free Speech.” The Wall Street Journal, November 30, 2021
This article focuses on Cornell and their issues of free speech on campus. It discusses alumni who were approached for seven figure donations, but held back because of concerns over Cornell’s free speech policies. I am using an excerpt from a Cornell student who wrote an opinion piece in the school’s paper. While it had nothing to do with race, he was berated in the comments section for being racist. This article will help me paint a picture of the student attitudes on college campuses.
Camp, Emma “I Came to College Eager to Debate. I Found Self-censorship.” New York Times, March 7, 2022
This article is one of the most important recent pieces published on this topic. The author, a UVA student, makes a number of claims using supportive data. Primarily, she argues that belief shaming and self censorship are stifling healthy debate. I use this article for several quotations. One of them is the data that she uses to show how prevalent self censorship is. I also use an excerpt that shows a professors opinion on the controversies.
Hudson, Davis, L. “Free Speech on Public College Campuses Overview” freedomforuminstitute.org March, 2018
This source is another important one for my project. It comes from the freedom forum institute, and it speaks about Supreme Court cases that have influenced free speech laws. Furthermore, it focuses on a specific case involving a UNH professor in 1947 which serves as a key point of historical context for me. The source also speaks about speech codes, which is a subtopic of my paper.
Schlott, Rikki. “Freedom of Speech is Endangered on College Campuses–And I’m Fighting Back,” The New York Post. July 31, 2021
This source from The New York Post features an NYU junior who felt silenced in her college experience. She speaks about cancel culture and the issues with over-sensitivity and people taking offense to more and more. The author also notes the conflation of speech and violence. This is another helpful source for my paper.
Jackson, Abby. “’Disinvitations’ For College Speakers Are on the Rise–Here’s a List of People Turned Away This Year.” Business Insider July, 2016
I am using this source for the section of my paper that explores the recent phenomenon of colleges disinviting conservative guest speakers. I use this source as the basis for that subtopic. The article lists various colleges and universities who have canceled guest speakers. I use it as a reference point for the data it includes. I believe this source is instrumental because it informs a topic important to my research.
Steinbuch, Yaron. “Yale Law Students Disrupt Bipartisan Speech Panel, Trigger Police Escort.” The New York Post. March 17, 2022
This source from The New York Post covers an incident that took place at Yale Law School. The source talks about an event held by Yale’s federalist society which was aimed at showing how a liberal Atheist and a conservative Christian could agree on issues of free speech. During the event, hundreds of protestors violently interrupted causing the police to be called to escort out the speakers and federalist society. I am using this piece to show the volatility of the political climate on college campuses and the ways in which free speech is being threatened.
Guerin, Kate. “First Amendment Experts Discuss Inclusion and Free Speech in Academia.” The Harvard Crimson. April 22, 2021
This final source from The Harvard Crimson magazine speaks about the current state of free speech in education. I am using a quotation from the Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer at Harvard. She speaks about the importance of protecting free speech because debate leads to the eventual truth. This source is important for my paper because it provides an example of current university administrators whose job is to protect students, yet who also value the existence of healthy debate as a tool for students’ intellectual growth.
