This week and over break I started looking through TikTok with the goal of identifying sociology TikTok. I found very minimal content related to Sociology through the #sociology or similar hashtags. I found a total of 7 Tiktoks that were explicitly about sociology theory. They covered symbolic interactionism theory, the looking glass self, structural functionalism (related to crime and deviance), social construct, and Marxism/conflict theory. Other themes found in videos tagged as sociology were videos that made fun of sociology as a discipline (jokes about the fact that nobody knows what sociology is, and about how useless sociology theory is), and about sociology A-levels. There was also a fair amount of content that was actually psychology. I did identify a 3 TikTok content creators which had at least a few videos about sociology (@mag8anegg @kbacon and @jadesix). I also looked at the way videos were presented on the account page summary (as in what the overview of posts look like). One very important aesthetic choice is to include visible titles so videos are easily identified.
The next step for research will be looking through other hashtags for videos that use a sociological imagination but are not tagged specifically as sociology.
