This week was mostly recording videos. Katie and I recorded our intro video together. I worked on scripts for the charmed circle and “concerted cultivation versus natural growth”, two of my favorite theories.
I also recorded several sociology students and non-sociology majors answering the question “what is sociology” for two more silly videos. The “meme” videos will be important for building rapport with the audience and viewership. I understand TikTok to be a primarily an entertainment app, so having content that falls more into this category will be useful.
Katie and I also put together our final presentation.
Next steps: finish this project.
- Finish scripts
- Record videos
- Edit / piece together videos
- Make bibliography
The Charmed Circle -draft
The charmed circle is maybe one of my favorite theories. Created by Gayle Rubin in her 1984 essay “Thinking Sex”, the sexuality charmed circle is a way of visualizing what forms of sexuality is privileged by society and what are stigmatized by society.

So it’s been a while since this was made, so it’s maybe a little bit shifted, but inside this circle (the good type of sex) you’ve got things like “procreative” “heterosexual” “at home”
and on the outside of the circle (the bad type of sex) we’ve got “with toys” “un-married” “in groups”. However, this concept can be expanded to any type of social system where there are some things which are valued and some things which are shunned.
