Grassroots organizations

http://www.citizensforpublicschools.org/ Citizens for Public schools began as a campaign to reject an effort to use Massachusetts tax dollars for parochial schools. Since that victory in 1982, the grassroots organization continues to push public schools to better serve the various needs of the students and the communities in which they live. They advocate for the separation of church and state and a deemphasis on standardized testing. Additionally, they were instrumental in the campaign against the November 2016 Massachusetts charter school ballot question.

https://www.facebook.com/questbps/ Quality Education for Every Student (Quest) is a parent led campaign in Boston that works to better public schools in Boston. The organization demands high quality education for all public school students. Similarly, they combat the spread of charter schools through involving their local communities. Initially prominent in the Jamaica plane area, they are spreading to other Urban districts within Boston.

http://www.bostonedjustice.org/Boston Education Justice Alliance is a coalition of parents, students, teachers, and community members that advocate for better public education. They empower the Boston community by giving them a platform to fight for their cause.

http://raiseupma.org/ Raise Up Massachusetts is comprised of labor unions and various community groups. This grassroots organization works to pass laws that support working class families. The Fair Share Amendment is one of their three campaigns; this would increase tax for the wealthy to increase funding for quality public education.

https://saveourpublicschoolsma.com/ Save Our Public Schools is a campaign that first and foremost rejects charter schools. The organization is a coalition of parents, teachers, and students that do not want funding for public schools to be lost to charters.

The NEAC supports civil rights; by fighting for equal access to education, they support better public education, not charter expansion. Juan Cofield is the president.

http://www.saveourschoolsnj.org/Save Our Schools Nj is a grassroots organization that rejects harmful spread of charter schools in their state. New Jersey serves as an interesting case study in the nationwide fight against charter schools. Segregation based on race, class, and ability is even more commonplace in these Nj charters than MA ones; this organization aims to illuminate the lack of equal access to quality education in New Jersey’s education system.

http://aftma.net/ The American Federation Teacher Association combats civil rights injustices against historically disenfranchised students and their communities through focusing on a grassroots approach. The Massachusetts branch is comprised of many local organizations within MA. Through these local connections, AFT-MA can provide community leaders the platform to be politically active. The AFT also played a major role in rejecting the increase of Charter schools in MA during the 2016 campaign.
