Segregation is all it takes

I think its interesting how successful segregation continues to be. In this section of reading, we see the effect the Wheaton school has had on the students performance. They have all become more dedicated. What does this say that it takes segregation to promote unity within minority populations, to increase performance and effort? Do you guys think segregation would take the same course in real life?

I found myself asking this same question. On the one hand, it makes sense that a group could be able to find unity in the face of a common enemy. However, I also have been thinking about the numerous psychological experiments that have demonstrated the notion of self-fulfilling prophecies: when a child is told they are dumber, less deserving, or just generally inferior, they believe it and act that way. I’m not sure how these two results would play out, and which would prove more influential.
