The Sellout (250-288)

On page 273-274, Beatty acknowledges the lack of discussion regarding race in the US. He notices that it has disappeared both as a result of post-Civil Rights movement sentiments, that race isn’t an “issue anymore,” and because of sensitivity regarding race. It’s difficult to have an open conversation if one side refuses to acknowledge the problem or is unsure of how to go about talking about it. But likewise, in order move forward there must be discussion, whether it be right or wrong, so that a comprehensive view of race in the US is developed.

That’s true because race is a tense topic to talk about. Beatty mentions that even though the prevalence of child abuse and race are difficult to talk about, more people keep complaining about racial issue than the prevalence. He assumes, “Here race is still all-consuming, but in a more positive fashion” (276) and ” The racism is rampant as usual, but no more virulent than a day trip to the Arizona state legislature” (280). These lucid quotes describes better changes if people integrate racial issue into the American society and everyone accepts both black and white people to be their friends. I absolutely agree that Americans should talk more about race since it still exist.
