It’s my first time of reading this novel. Even I try to consciusly read the Great Gatsby, I still keep questioning myself in every chapter. From page 1 to 112, I am wondering about what Gatsby’s background is, why Daisy didn’t choose Gatsby but get married with Tom, how this novel relate to American dream, etc. It is really interesting that Fitzgerald shows complicated relations between Tom and Daisy, Gatsby and Daisy, Tom and Myrtle, George and Myrtle. I’m curious how Fitzgerald writes their relationship ending.

While reading the novel, I had the same question: why did Daisy marry Tom instead of Gatsby? We see that the day before her wedding she had a mental breakdown. She exclaims to Jordan that she’s changed her mind and doesn’t want to go through with the wedding. We see her laying in a bathtub clenching a letter. Can we assume the letter was from Gatsby? After her bath, she has regained her composure and continues with the wedding plans. It was as if she had an instinctual feeling that marrying Tom was not what she was meant to do, but she did it anyway. Perhaps he embodied the life she desired and Gatsby didn’t? We know that Daisy and Gatsby had a instant connection. “The officer looked at Daisy while she was speaking in a way that every young girl wants to be looked at some point,” (75). Jordan, who was recounting the event, could sense the romance between the two. Why would Daisy throw this away for Tom?
