Art should imitate nature not in its appearance but in its manner of operation. John Cage
For this project, students were asked to create a drawing by using a process, system, or device outside of their direct control—in other words, a work based on chance or aleatory procedures (from the Latin alea; a game of dice).
This “process, system, or device” could be either natural or human-made, and could be either an existing process or one created by the artist. The use of computers, social networks, and other forms of technology were also options. The artwork could be hand-made as long as the decisions in the drawing were primarily generated by chance procedures.
