Abstract (Statement of Topic)

This film explores millennial use of fashion as resistance. Although fashion media claims that millennials are resisting traditional expressions of race, class, gender, and sexuality through fashion, millennials have a more complicated understanding of their clothing.  After interviewing seven Bowdoin students that stand out as resisting the dominant fashion culture on campus, it is clear that reinforcing or resisting expectations is dependent on identity. Millennials feel able to resist certain norms depending on the bodies they inhabit, the spaces they navigate, and the intersection of their bodies with space. These factors also impact whether or not their fashion will be interpreted as resistance.
