Reflecting on my presentation, I think it went really well. From a general standpoint, I definitely expected the reactions I received. It was clear from our class that many of us did not know what eSports is and how it is beginning to function and become a part of contemporary society. It was actually very amusing to see my classmates reactions to the video I showed in class because it was obvious there is still a serious disconnect between the eSports culture and mainstream society, reinforcing my research in that eSports is still searching to find legitimacy in today’s culture. In addition, I received some helpful feedback from many of the students in our class. One of the main themes we discussed was the fact that even though eSports has a massive fan base and is a billion dollar business it is clear there is still a significant population that does not know or understand the culture of eSports. I never really thought about this aspect while doing my research and it is definitely something I want to research more in depth. Moreover, as I mentioned in my presentation, the history of the eSports culture is somewhat unknown and a feature of eSports history that is certainly worth researching. Obviously, billion dollar business do not develop overnight so I believe the next step I want to take my project is to discover more information about how eSports started. From a couple of sources, some argue that the culture originated in the 1980’s when arcades were a massive hit, especially within the teenage community. During the 80’s many parents were able to drop their kids off at arcades after school where they were able to watch each other play games, socialize, and each other’s company. This type of setting sounds eerily similar to what people describe contemporary eSports culture as. Most of my research has been strictly constrained to the past three to five years and I believe that if I am able to retrieve more about the origin of eSports then I will be able to better understand the sociology of eSports and perhaps gain more insight as to what questions can we ask that can further our understanding of this new phenomenon. All in all, I feel pretty good about the direction of my project and looking forward to learning more about the history and origin of eSports.
