This project analyzes both surveys measuring millennial attitudes on race and race relations in America and polling data from the past presidential election. I also supplement this quantitative data with qualitative research, notably journal articles, books, digital projects, and newspaper articles, because it is important that I delve beyond statistics and attempt to deconstruct and investigate the motivations behind how and why millennials conceptualize race. I intend to focus on differences between white and black millennial attitudes and unpacking the reasons behind said distinctions. Statistics and voting information cannot give the full picture of how millennials understand race and whiteness. I plan on combing through the quantitative research first and, after unpacking this data, then exploring qualitative research that can further shed light on millennial attitudes.
